How to Apply for Section 8 in New Hampshire

To submit a New Hampshire Section 8 application, residents must apply to their local Public Housing Authority (PHA). In the state, each PHA is responsible for accepting Section 8 applications, reviewing each applicant’s eligibility based on the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) guidelines and issuing vouchers for the program. 

Applicants must apply for Section 8 by providing the necessary information about themselves and their family. Candidates may mail the application form or apply online for low-income housing. To qualify for the program, each family member must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen. How to Apply for Low Income Housing in New Hampshire

To apply for low-income housing, New Hampshire residents must fill out an application for the Housing Choice Voucher program and submit it to their local Public Housing Authority (PHS). On the HUD housing application, residents must provide their:

  • Full Name.
  • Social Security Number.
  • Names and Social Security Numbers of all household members.
  • Monthly income for the applicant and all household members.
  • Citizenship status.
  • Information about criminal history.

Documentation Required

Each member of the family must state his or her citizenship status as either citizen, qualified non-citizen or undeclared. Anyone who lists their status as undeclared on the HUD section 8 application is ineligible. However, the remaining members of the family may still qualify. Applicants must also provide evidence of citizenship by submitting one of the following:

  • Social Security card
  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport
  • Military ID

Eligible non-citizens must provide one of the following:

  • Alien Registration Receipt Card
  • Arrival-Departure Record with an annotation of Asylum or Deportation stayed by the Attorney General
  • Unannotated Arrival-Departure Record with a final court action granting asylum or court decision granting withholding of deportation
  • Temporary Resident Card
  • Employment Authorization Card
  • Original Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) Documentation

Upon request, the PHA processing your application may require you to provide the following information to support your Section 8 application.

  • Disability – Applicants must provide their SSI or Social Security disability payments to prove their disability status.
  • Full-Time Student – Full-time students may be required to submit a letter from the school stating the student’s status.
  • Income – To verify income, the PHA may need paystubs, tax returns, or child support and alimony award letters. 
  • Assets – Candidates may be required to submit proof of assets using bank statements, property tax statements or other documentation as required by the PHA.

How to Apply for NH Section 8 Housing by Mail

Residents must apply for Section 8 at their local Public Housing Authority (PHA). Many counties have waiting lists and as such require applicants to complete a preliminary HUD housing application to get their name on the waiting list. How to Apply for New Hampshire Section 8 Housing in Person

Similarly to how only some counties allow mail-in applications, the number of counties that accept in-person applications are also limited. However, residents who have questions on how to sign up for Section 8 may wish to schedule an appointment at their local PHA office for help.

Before the appointment, applicants should gather all information and documentation required for the application. For example, they should bring a copy of their Social Security card, proof of income and citizenship documentation. The PHA representative can answer any questions the candidate may have and provide helpful information on how to best complete the HUD Section 8 application. 

If you decide to complete the full application process at your local PHA, you can submit your application the same day you complete it as long as the housing authority accepts paper applications. However, keep in mind that the application process will not be expedited whether you turn in your application online, in person or by mail. 

What happens after you submit a Section 8 Housing application form in NH?

After submitting your Section 8 application, the PHA places will place you on a waiting list. The length of the waiting list varies per county. However, candidates are encouraged to submit Section 8 applications at multiple PHA offices. Once the applicant’s name nears the top of the list, the PHA will contact the applicant for the next step in the application process. These steps include:

  • Providing income verification.
  • Providing evidence of residency and citizenship status.
  • Background checks.

The PHA may also require the candidate to attend mandatory interviews and orientation sessions before being granted a housing voucher. After providing the required information, the resident must locate suitable rental housing. They are free to select housing of their choice if it meets the rental limits established by the PHA. Once the voucher recipient finds housing, the PHA must inspect the unit. The inspection ensures that the home is safe, sanitary and habitable. After the inspection, candidates work with the landlord to finalize the lease paperwork and prepare for move-in. If an applicant fails any of these steps, he or she will be denied affordable housing.
